My novel Prakashno Padchhayo (in Gujarati) was first published in 1988 (English version ‘Mahatma Vs Gandhi’). In the preface to the Novel, I said as a matter of fact that “Gandhi in his life, could never make two persons understand him—his eldest son Harilal and Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnha.” Subsequently, when the novel generated a serious debate, a well meaning friend said to me, “You told us in your novel why Gandhiji could not make to understand Harilal. Now you write why Gandhiji could not make Muhammad Ali Jinnah to understand him.” That was an interesting propostion, but I could not give it a serious thought at that time. I retired from the service in 1996. At the farewell function, the same friend again reminded, “When are you presenting us the real picture of Jinnah?”
