Accordingly, in the emerging world order in the 21st century, India has a remarkable opportunity to achieve an optimum global posture. At the same time, however, India has to face formidable challenges in realizing its true potential and capabilities. It is, therefore, necessary to ponder over what are the critical issues that have to be addressed and what kind of foreign policy would enable India to maintain its autonomy in international politics, secure its frontiers, cope with the challenges of cross border terrorism, eradicate poverty and sustain a growth rate of 8-10 per cent per year so that it is able to achieve the status of a global power in the 21st century.
