Researching for this book on military quotes has been an enriching and erudite experience. The subject is vast. History has a long and venerable pedigree and in the recorded history of man there has never been a century without a war. Mankind has had ten-thousand years of experience at fighting in various forms of combat, and the literature on the subject is enormous. The choice of quotes has perforce to be eclectic. The publisher, Rajan Arya, while being very supportive, had laid down a page limit. This constrained its own brevity, especially when one felt that there was always one more quote to include. Be that as it may, the endeavour has been to include quotes on every facet of the military and those that impact it in various ways. Quotations inspire us, make us laugh, give us perspective, and sometimes just help us say what needs to be said. There are different categories of quotes in this volume – the military profession encompasses duty, honour, courage, valour, humour, ethos, experience of soldiering, knowledge of history, inspiration, motivation, management, command and leadership, amongst myriad issues of strategy and tactics which are representative of the military and the fine body of men it represents. The profession has soldiers, sailors, airmen, commanders and foot-soldiers. It is impacted by statesmen, politicians, writers and society, in general. What they have had to say through the course of history, on various aspects of military professionalism and conduct, is relevant to the understanding the nature of life in the military. Some quotes are over-arching and represent diverse military virtues and values. It was; therefore, best to mention them alphabetically, by authorship rather than subject.
