The trajectories and contents of the Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement between
the two countries to enhance such cooperation have become a part of
incessant debate in the political process of India. Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh and the Congress party were always keen to push through the Indo-
U.S. nuclear deal. However, within the Congress-led United Progressive
Alliance (UPA) the left parties had strong reservations about the deal owing
to its strategic implications. This eventually has led to the withdrawal of
the support of the left to the UPA led coalition. In a word, the prospects
of the Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement have had wide-ranging repercussions
on the domestic politics and foreign policy of India. In view of this, the
present volume is going to be a timely contribution to a lively debate on
Indo-U.S. nuclear cooperation.
